Shanghai Airport Authority launches city terminal revamp
Released:2021-11-22

A major renovation project for the Shanghai Airport City Terminal was launched on Nov 18, as an extensive addition to the Jing'an district of East China's Shanghai city.

As the first city terminal that went into use in the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Airport City Terminal was completed and went into operation in the Jing'an Temple business district on West Nanjing Road in 2002. As such, it provided convenient travel for passengers at Shanghai's airports with its favorable location.

But with the ever-increasing social and economic development and the rapid changes in the city, the appearance of the terminal was widely seen as not being in line with the upbeat image of the Jing'an Temple business district and its functions could no longer satisfy passenger needs.

Responding to calls for the city's renewal being raised by the Shanghai municipal Party committee and the government, the Jing'an district government and the Shanghai Airport Authority (SAA) signed a strategic cooperation agreement in May 2020, to jointly advance the renovation of the terminal.

Remaining as a comprehensive complex that integrates aviation services, business and office service functions, the city terminal will incorporate Exit 3 of the Jing'an Temple Station. It will thus be connected to the pedestrian path of West Nanjing Road, to achieve seamless connections between metro and aviation services. Current estimates are that the project will be completed in the second half year of 2023.

In active response to the nation's pledge to achieve peak carbon emissions by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060, the SAA will focus on improving the quality, functions and appearance of the complex, upgrading the terminal into a green, smart and efficient demonstration project of Shanghai's urban renewal.
